A Summer Guide to Growing Microgreens in Your Vertical Vegetable Garden
With warm weather and plenty of rain, summer is the perfect time to try new things and learn more about yourself as a gardener—both in the dirt AND the kitchen. Whether you’re growing new vegetables or mixing up your regular recipes, this is the season for self growth. In this blog post, we’ll show you your next biggest gardening adventure: microgreens.
So, What ARE Microgreens?
Unpacking These Delicious Summer Veggies
Microgreens are exactly what they sound like—small versions of your favorite greens. While they come in all different shapes and flavors, they’re most commonly found on your dinner table as garnishes and side salads. These small greens don’t just make dishes look better, but they pack a huge nutritional punch, too. Due to their small size, they’re filled with around 40x more nutrients than their adult counterparts, making them a perfect additive to smoothies and recipes. Whether you’re looking for savory or spicy flavors, microgreens can give you that exact extra flavor you’re looking for.
So, why microgreens? They’re fast-growing, add freshness to dishes, and won’t wilt in the summer heat like mature leaves will. Not only this, but they have a wide variety of health benefits, including reducing the risk of:
- Heart disease
- Alzheimer’s disease
- Diabetes
- Certain cancers
No matter how you dice (or chop) it, microgreens taste great, give your body it's necessary vitamins and minerals, AND are easy to grow.

Tips For Success in Your Vertical Vegetable Garden
Good news—microgreens thrive in our Garden Tower® especially in warmer weather! To start the process, seeds should be rinsed and then laid on top of the soil. The soil and seeds need to be kept damp. YOu can begin harvesting at whatever growth height you want, but usually waiting until they are approximately 2” tall works best. To harvest, cut right above the soil line, wash, and serve immediately. Alternatively, you can grow them in a jar or seed sprouter.
What’s not to love? Microgreens have a quick turnaround time, add flavor and nutrition to your favorite dishes, and can be grown by gardeners of all abilities and expertise levels.
